Harnessing the Sun: Sanfu treatments for Winter ailments
Sanfu tie treatments have ancient roots, these treatments are mentioned in the Yellow Emperor’s classic of internal medicine dating back to the Warring States period in China over 2,200 years ago.
These treatments typically involve the application of warming and hot herbs to the back - specifically to the all important acupoint Du14 -Dazhui. This point is a meeting point for all 6 Yang channels of the arms and legs and also known as a Sea of Qi point - meaning that Qi is easily influenced at this point. More recently, people have taken to harnessing the Yang energy of the Sanfu period by sunbathing. This is a great option to do at home - but please be cautious of sun over-exposure; wear your sunscreen or protective clothing and check out my Surviving summer months post to learn what foods you can utilize to avoid getting overheated.
Sanfu treatments are done during Sanfu periods, also known as the “Dog days” of Summer. These are 3 10-day intervals that correspond with the hottest days of the year; the sun is out the longest and Yang energy is at its peak. The theory behind these treatments is that Yang is most available to us and through these treatments we are able to tonify Qi and Yang in order to have reserves during the Winter months when Yang is at its lowest and we are susceptible to pathogenic invasion.
Taking advantage of the Sanfu period is suitable to everyone but especially those who tend to run cold, have low energy, and frequently find themselves sick in the winter.
Sanfu treatments are commonplace in mainland China; thousands of people go to TCM clinics yearly during this time period to receive Sanfu in order to protect themselves from illness in wintertime. Try utilizing the Sanfu period this year for yourself!
